Finance for Kidz: Volume 12, Savings Book Review

Brothers Kapil & Vikesh Dheeriya, ages five and six, understand how to budget their money and already know about balancing a checkbook. This interest in money management runs in the family. Their dad, Dr. Prakash Dheeriya, is a finance professor determined to raise “good financial citizens” and set his sons on a positive path.

To help other parents explain these concepts to their own children, Dr. Dheeriya authored Finance for Kidz, a 20-volume series of books that teaches children about money management, personal finance and planning for the future. Written in storybook form, the illustrated series explains key financial concepts through children’s day-to-day experiences.

Professor helps children understand money management with new series

A volatile stock market, shady lending practices and mortgage fraud are just a few ways that personal finance has become more complicated today than it was just a decade ago. In an unstable economy, it is more important than ever to provide children with a foundation of good financial sense.

Inspired by his wish to prepare his two young sons to be “good financial citizens,” California State University-Dominguez Hills professor of finance Dr. Prakash Dheeriya authored Finance for Kidz, a 20-volume series of books that teaches children about money management, personal finance and planning for the future.

“I saw the financial meltdown happening all around us and the impact of that on people’s lives,” says Dheeriya. “I don't want my kids to face this kind of crisis again. If people had been better educated in the basic principles of finance, I think such a crisis could have been minimized.”

Written in storybook form, the series explains key financial concepts through children’s day-to-day experiences. Topics include inflation and deflation, wants versus needs and budgeting. Dheeriya says the main thing children need to learn about personal finance is that “money is just a tool.”

“If they understand what it can and cannot do, then they will be able to control it, rather than live life as if money controlled them,” he says.

Dheeriya, a frequent speaker at conferences, chambers of commerce and rotary clubs, has taught finance and investments for more than 20 years. He lives near Los Angeles with his wife and children.

Dr. Prakash Dheeriya

I was excited to review Dr Prakash Dheeriya's book for chidren,  Finance for Kidz: Volume 12, Savings. I knew that this book would be a really good tool for my daughter to learn about money and finance.

Dr Prakash Dheeriya was born in India and received a PhD in Finance from the University of North Texas after receiving his Masters in Management Studies and Bachelors of Commerce from the University of Bombay. He currently lives in Southern California and is a professor of finance at California State University-Dominguez Hills.

Dr Dheeriya is a father of two young boys and as a professor of finance, is the perfect person to author books about finance for kids. Finance for Kidz is a book series with 20 volumes in all. Each volume covers a different principle of finance and each story flows into the next. You can read the whole series all the way through or pick which topics best fit your family, as each book can be read separately.

The books are sturdy and printed on thick graphic paper so you can get many years of good use out of them. Finance for Kidz is intended for children in kindergarten through 3rd grade, but the simple concepts are easy for all children to understand. I love that the books are interactive and should be read with a parent to help apply the concepts to your family's finances. Its also a good way to build positive interaction.

I know this book will be very useful for my daughter to learn about finance over the next few years. There just isn't enough finance education for children younger than high school age. I never took a finance class until high school and remember wondering as a child how parents wrote checks, etc etc.

Thanks to PR by the Book for the book sample!

*I received a sample of Finance for Kidz to facilitate my candid and honest review. No other form of compensation was or will be given for this review. All personal views are my own!
