NaBloPoMo: April Monthly Wrap Up

For my last official NaBloPo post I am doing the Monthly Wrap Up for April. I had so much fun with NaBloPoMo and it has really helped me get more into personal blogging. Such as Manic Monday, Tasty Tuesday, Wordless Wednesday/Sepia Scenes, Shelf Share Thursday, Aloha Friday, 6 Degrees of Blogging, and the Monthly Wrap Up. I may not post each topic every day of the week but whenever I have time for blogging or when something strikes my fancy, I will post. Thanks for all your wonderful comments!

NaBloPoMo: Aloha Friday #5

Today's post is inspired by An Island Life blog. Just post a random question on your blog. You can link your post to the McLinky on An Island Life's blog. Its a good way to find new bloggy friends!

What are your favorite TV Shows? Why? Found anything good lately?

I love to DVR my favorite TV shows or watch them On Demand. My favorite shows are on HBO & Showtime. They have no commercials and don't bleep out the curse words. LOL! My favorite show lately is a re-discovery. Nurse Jackie. Its a 30-minute series on Showtime on Monday nights. I watched a bit of the first season but didnt get into it. Then one day I was bored and watched the whole first season On Demand, before the second series premiered. I loved it! Now I am enjoying watching the second season. Nurse Jackie is a nurse (obviously) and struggles with pill addiction, cheating on her husband, while doing good deeds in her everyday life. She is portrayed by the wife from the Sopranos. Forgot her name.

Another fave thats always been a fave is United States of Tara, which is currently also in its second season on Showtime, following Nurse Jackie on Monday nights. It is written by Diablo Cody (Juno) and is about a mom who has multiple personality disorder and her struggles with that. 30 minute show. Love it!

True Blood is another fave and if you haven't seen an episode, your living under a rock. Its on HBO and the third season premieres this June. They are currently re-airing the second season and some bonus shorts will be aired starting this coming Sunday following the re-aired episodes. You can purchase the first season on DVD and the second season will be coming to DVD this month. The green light has already been given to tape a fourth season. The series is loosely based on the books The Sookie Stackhouse Novels/Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris. I have read the first book (excellent) and there are 9 books in all. The first book was published about 10 years ago. The series rovolves around the main character Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) and her vampire boyfriend Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) and the fictional Louisiana town Bon Temps and its colorful inhabitants. It is a 1 hour show.

Another fave is The Vampire Diaries on the CW and it is one of the only non-cable series I watch. The first season is currently wrapping up on the network. The series is loosely based on the books of the same name by L. J. Smith (L. Jane Smith). The first 4 books were published in the early 1990's and three additional books have been published in 2009, 2010, and the last will be published March 2011. The story is centered around the main character Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), her vampire boyfriend Stephen Salvatore (Paul Wesley), his vampire brother Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) and the creepy town of Mystic Falls.

Big Love is another fave on HBO, they just wrapped up the 4th season. The show is based on a fictional polygamist family in Utah. The main character Bill is a businessman and has three wives, and tons of children. The show is full of drama and keeps you on your toes!

Last but not least is Dexter, a long time favorite on Showtime. The 4th season wrapped up last fall/winter. The show is based on Dexter, a man who murders murderers. He's kind of a Robin Hood of sorts... of killers. (SPOILER ALERT) Last season his wife was murdered and I am looking forward to next season. It will be interesting to see what direction Dexter's life takes, as he had just become a new father.

Wow I didn't think I would write so much! What are your favorite TV shows??

NaBloPoMo: Tasty Tuesday

I had wings for dinner and one of my favorite ways to eat them is grilled. Thought you guys might enjoy a yummy Grilled Buffalo Wings recipe for Tasty Tuesday.

Grilled Buffalo Wings

Prep Time:
15 Min
Cook Time:
50 Min
Ready In:
1 Hr 5 Min

Servings

Original Recipe Yield 8 servings

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds chicken wings, separated at joints, tips discarded
  • 1 cup Louisiana-style hot sauce
  • 1 (12 fluid ounce) can or bottle cola-flavored carbonated beverage
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper, or to taste
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce

Directions

  1. Preheat a grill to medium heat.
  2. In a large pot, mix together the hot sauce, cola, cayenne pepper, black pepper and soy sauce. Add the wings to the sauce - frozen is okay. Place the pot to one side of the grill, so the sauce comes to a simmer.
  3. Use tongs to fish wings out of the sauce, and place them on the grill for 8 to 10 minutes. Then return to the sauce to simmer. Repeat this process for about 50 minutes. The sauce will thicken. When the chicken is tender and pulls easily off of the bone, you have two options. You can dip one last time and serve for sloppy style wings, or serve right off the grill for dryer wings.

NaBloPoMo: Tuesday's Tip Jar

I got the idea for today's post - Tuesday's Tip Jar - from Blog Mommas. The idea is to give your best mom tip! It can be anything really. Home, family, or parenting related and beyond.

My tip is really one of the only tips I know. Its a cleaning tip I learned from my boss when I worked on a home and business cleaning crew about 5 yrs ago. Its a tip for cleaning the microwave. Hopefully I haven't posted this before!
Just get a lemon and cut it in half. Squeeze some of the juice into a microwave safe bowl with a bit of water in it-maybe an inch or so of water. Then put the squeezed lemon half in the bowl of water and microwave it- up to 5 minutes.
Heating the lemon gets all the gunk off the walls of your microwave and its safe too! Just wipe off the inside of microwave with a warm damp cloth and your done. No harsh chemicals required.

NaBloPoMo: Not so Wordless Monday

I have a bunch of NaBloPoMo to make up for since I didn't post Saturday & Sunday. So I'll be posting two NaBlo posts today and two tomorrow.
Here is the family photo taken just yesterday at my family reunion in East Texas. I am in the front bottom right with my daughter in my lap, seated crosslegged, second from right. My sister and her two kids are on the bottom left seated crosslegged. Between us are the triplets, born when I was about 10 so they're about 14 now. They are my cousins. Seated in chairs above me are the family elders. My brother and his wife are at the very back standing, center of the photo, below the lights. And tons of other family members and cousins. You may be able to click on the photo to see it enlarged.
My maternal side of the family has lived in that area of East Texas near Huntsville since the late 1800's. My maternal grandmother, grandfather, and many other ancestral family members are buried in the cemetery there in Trinity, TX. Our family owns land and sells the lumber. Every year we meet to discuss the lumber corporation and to visit with each other. They have been doing the yearly meeting out in the woods on the family land for about 40 years but they held the meeting before that elsewhere. Its really a treasured part of my family history and I hope to pass on this tradition to my daughter.

NaBloPoMo:Manic Monday

If you could write your own bill of rights, what would you include? Much of what is in Americas bill of rights. but just a little better. freedom of speech, freedom to gather, freedom of education, freedom of marriage, freedom of religion, freedom to grow crops from the seeds god gave us, etc.

What is going on in the world today that affects you the most? the economic downturn has had somewhat of an effect on our family, I lost a job that I had had for a short time last August, and now just work part time. My husband works in restaurants and there are good and bad (profit wise) nights. But we are bouncing back lately. Its about time!
But there are many other issues that affect us, and issues that I care about. The earth/global warming, music education for children, child abuse prevention awareness, cancer prevention, etc.

What do you think is the secret to a good life? Being happy. Having a good family and friends. Enjoying your job and pursuing an education. Living in a place you like. Seeing the world. Eating good food!

Feel free to copy & paste to your blog and leave me the link in the comments below! Thanks to http://manicmondaymeme.blogspot.com/ for the post idea.

NaBloPoMo: Aloha Friday #4

Today's NaBloPoMo post is inspired by An Island Life blog. Just post a random question and you can link back to Kailani's McLinky on her blog. Here goes...

Some parents think that the toys in Happy Meals make kids crave bad foods like cheeseburgers and fries. What do you think of the idea of taking toys out of Happy Meals, or charging for them if you want them?

This is another hot topic thats been discussed on a lot of the parenting blogs. Some say that the toys do make kids crave bad foods, some think its silly and parents should do more to control their kids diets. Others think that making the toy optional for a small charge is a good idea.

I am in agreement with the parents who think we should all do more to control our kids diets. After your child is a baby and turns one, you should feed them a variety of foods, such as give them what you are eating for dinner, so they wont be so picky and learn to appreciate different tastes. We can all do more to shape our childs palate from an early age. There are healthy choices in happy meals now, such as white meat chicken nuggets, apple slices, and low fat milk. The toy shouldn't be blamed for those parents who have let their kids run amok and eat whatever they want!

Those are my thoughts, I'd be happy to hear yours! Post your comments below.

NaBloPoMo: Happy Earth Day!

Today's NaBloPoMo post idea was easy... just to wish everyone Happy Earth Day! There are tons of easy ways to do something for the earth on Earth Day. Plant a tree or flower (or herb), take your reusable bags to the grocery store, pick up a recycling bin from your local fire station, or recycle your old cell phones, batteries and computers. (e-waste) Or make a promise to yourself to live a greener lifestyle from here on out!
My daughter went to speech therapy today and they had an Earth Day lesson. They watered plants, recycled, and colored little earth's!
Happy Earth Day everyone, this is the 40th anniversary!

NaBloPoMo: Tasty Tuesday

For today's NaBloPoMo post I am doing Tasty Tuesday again. Inspired by some delicious tomatillos I saw at the grocery yesterday, here is the recipe for a delicious green tomatillo sauce. The recipe is from one of my all time favorite restaurants in Houston, TX, Mama Ninfa's. Growing up in Houston my family and I ate there all the time. Its the best green sauce of all time! Enjoy with tortilla chips or any Mexican cuisine.
They had a franchise here in Austin but sadly it closed down not too long ago. Austin folks just dont know! ;)

Ninfa’s Green Sauce

Ingredients:

3 medium-sized green tomatoes, coarsely chopped (you can substitute yellow if you can’t find green ones, but never use red)
4 tomatillos, cleaned and chopped
1 to 2 jalapenos, stemmed and coarsely chopped
3 small garlic cloves
3 medium-sized ripe avocados, peeled, pitted and sliced
4 sprigs cilantro
1 tsp. of salt
1 1/2 cups of sour cream

Method:

Combine chopped tomatoes, tomatillos, jalapenos and garlic in a saucepan. Bring to a boil (tomatoes provide the liquid), reduce heat and simmer 10 to 15 minutes.
Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
Place tomato mixture with the avocados, cilantro and salt in food processor or blender and blend until smooth.
Pour into a bowl and stir in sour cream.

Makes 4 to 5 cups

NaBloPoMo: Manic Monday

I got the idea for today's NaBloPoMo post from Manic Monday blog. Every Monday Lisa asks different questions. I have copied the questions and will answer them below:

How has your life been different than you imagined? Having my daughter early in life is a bit different than I imagined. Also I wish I was done with college by now. I think everyone wishes the best for themselves. I wish I had a great job, owned my own house and nice car. But alas, I do not... yet!

What lessons have you learned from your relationships? That they are not easy. You have to be honest and loving, caring, compassionate. Relationships are not for the purpose of manipulating others and walking all over them. And often people can change and that can change the dynamics of relationships.
Having a child early I grew apart from a lot of my close girl friends. So now I cherish the few friendships I do have.

If you had to move to a city besides the one you currently live in, where would you move? New York or Los Angeles area, probably. Most of the blogging engagements I get invited to are there and if I lived there, I could network much better.

Feel free to copy the questions and answer them on your blog. Just leave me the link in the comments below!

NaBloPoMo: 6 Degrees of Blogging Sunday

I had so much fun with my 6 Degrees of Blogging post last week that I may just make it a weekly event. Basically you use the '6 Degrees' rule to discover new blogs. This is how I will do it: I will start with the last person to comment on my blog, then go to the first link I find on their blog. And so on and so forth until I get to the 6th blog. The 6th blog will be featured! Here goes...

The last person with a blog to comment on 512 Kidz is Tara at Go Green Street blog. The first blog link I found at Go Green Street blog is Modern Hippie Mag online magazine which has many contributors. The first comment I found on Modern Hippie Mag is from Jen from Eco-Office Gals. The first blog link I found at Eco-Office Gals is Stefanie at Focus Organic. The first comment I found at Focus Organic is Veronica at Life with Nature. And the last link is... the first comment I found on Life with Nature is Averie at Love Veggies and Yoga blog. What a coincidence... I love veggies and yoga! Very interesting that this 6 degrees of blogging post took me on a whole trail of eco friendly green blogs?!

Averie at Love Veggies and Yoga blog is a vegan and raw foods enthusiast. She is passionate about yoga, physical fitness, and being happy. She is gluten free, soy-light, powered by plants, loves her family and chocolate desserts.
Sounds like a fun lady! I should tear a page out of her healthy lifestyle book.

I had fun on this 6 degrees of blogging tour and it was cool to find so many green blogs that were new to me. And so many nice moms and bloggers! Have a great Sunday everyone, and if you do a 6 degrees of blogging post, be sure to leave me the link in the comments.

NaBloPoMo: Saturday 6

I got the idea for today's NaBloPoMo post from Saturday 9 blog. I intended to have 6 questions but there's 8. The more the better! Feel free to copy the questions to your blog and answer them. Just leave me the link in the comments section. Thanks!

1. Who is your favorite relative and why?
When I was little my favorite people in the whole world were my maternal aunt and maternal grandmother, whom we called Grammice. She lived 94 good years and passed away when I was 20. My maternal aunt is my mothers fraternal twin sister, whom we call Aunt Ruthie. She lives in Incline Village, NV and Palm Desert, CA. I don't really have a favorite relative now!

2. Who is the most important person in your life?

My daughter and then my husband. Couldn't leave him out but of course my daughter means the world to me!

3. Name one thing you used to do that you are not proud of.

 Smoke cigarettes.

4. Tell us about the furthest you've ever been from what you consider "home".

Mexico. Went on vacation there a few times as a kid and most recently went there again on a cruise in September 2008 with my husband and 2 friends. We went on a 5 day cruise to Progresso, Mexico and Cozumel, Mexico.

5. Who would you want to be locked in a room with for 24 hours?

Ian Somerhalder. He plays Damon on The Vampire Diaries on the CW and is a major hottie. Just to pick his brain... yeah.

6. What are you doing this weekend?

Not much, just relaxing. Gotta work at the church Sunday morning.

7. Other than your own, whose car were you in last?

My friend Jessy, she came to visit me this week with her son. We went out for lunch.

8. Tell us about the last compliment that you've received.

I really dont remember! Probably when I was still going to the gym on a regular basis (over a year ago), I used to get compliments a lot more back then...!

NaBloPoMo: Aloha Friday #3

What do you think of the mom who sent her adopted son back to Russia?

If you haven't read a related article, check it out:  http://losangelesnewstoday.com

In a nutshell a Tennessee mom sent her adopted son back to Russia after she could no longer deal with his disturbed behavior. She pinned a note in his pocket saying she could no longer care for him, sent him on a plane back to Russia, had someone meet and escort him through the airport, and hired a driver to drive him back to the orphanage.
This has been a hot topic on a lot of the parenting blogs and I think its an outrage. The womans actions have set off an international incident and Russia is not letting Americans adopt their children until further notice. I understand that she could not deal with the child's behavior, but there are many other responsible, legal options. The woman should have contacted the agency first and foremost, the adoption could have been dissolved and another loving family could have adopted the child. The agency could have guided her in finding a solution. Instead she faces jail time.
I can't understand how someone would think this is a viable solution to the problem. Supposedly the woman was given legal advice that lead her to make these decisions. In my eyes an adoption is legal and that child is now yours. Its just as bad as sending your own child on a plane to nowhere. She should have gone through the legal channels to give the child up as a biological parent would when they can no longer deal with the child.
She had only adopted the boy in September 2009 so it had only been 8 months. And to my horror, she was in the process of adopting a new child from another agency when she sent the boy back to Russia.
I hate to bash people but it really is inexcusable.

What are your thoughts on this hot button issue?

NaBloPoMo: Vintage Recipe Thursday

I was searching for ideas for todays NaBloPoMo post and found a good one. I got the idea from Joy of Desserts blog. The idea is to post Vintage Recipes: original vintage family recipes, and out of print recipes from old cookbooks, etc. I have an old cookbook that was my stepfather's mother's, she passed away about 4 years ago and I inherited it. The cookbook is from 1957 and is called Helen Corbitt's Cookbook. I found the following recipe in a section named "And What to Serve on Friday" and it sounds really good!

Strawberry Omelet with Sour Cream

For 1

Ingredients

3 eggs
1 tbsp light cream
1/4 tsp salt
2 tbsp butter
1/4 cup sour cream
1/2 cup frozen or fresh strawberries
Powdered Sugar

Directions

Beat the eggs in a bowl, add the cream and salt. Beat with a fork for 1/2 minute. Heat the butter in a skillet until it sizzles. Pour in the beaten eggs. Stir once or twice with a fork. Lift the edges as the eggs begin to cook and let the liquid part run under. Shake the pan back and forth to keep the omelet free. When cooked but still soft on top, add 1/2 of the sour cream and 1/2 of the berries. Slide the omelet well to the right edge of the platter. Pour remaining sour cream and berries on top, sprinkle lightly with powdered sugar, and run under a hot broiler for 10 seconds.

That sounds so good. Enjoy!

NabloPoMo: Facebook Meme

I got the idea for my make up NaBloPoMo (#12) post from The Queen's Meme blog. Mimi, Queen of Meme's posts meme's on almost every topic. I found a fun facebook meme and decided to give it a whirl. Feel free to copy the questions and post them on your blog. Leave me your link in the comments below!

1. Facebook has now surpassed Google in number of users and traffic.
How much time do you spend on Facebook? If not FB, do you use Twitter? I used to use facebook alot more but have been burnt out lately. I still love FB though! I use twitter a lot more.

2. What is Farmville? A silly facebook game

3. Do you war in the Mafia Wars? No thought I did play the game at one point.

4. What is Cafe World? Another silly facebook game

5. Are you being bombarded with these "See Who Has Been Looking At your Profile - See Who Your Peeps Are?" application request lately? Yes dang spammers

6. Which FB or Twitter applications, tags or gifts irritate you the most and why? farmville, etc

7. Every morning I am faced with the question at the top of my Facebook profile page, "What's On Your Mind?" Does the whole world need to know what I'm thinking at every moment? But if you had to answer that question honestly at 9:00 am each morning, what would you say? No and if I was being literal I'd say just got up, having breakfast, that sort of thing.
8. Do you know how you became friends and followers with everyone in your list on Facebook and Twitter? most of my fb friends are real friends, twitter friends are networking friends.

9. Have you ever been deceived online by someone you thought was someone else? How did you know? No

12. Think about it. We are all flitting around making bird noises on the internet. What would the PETA people say?! Can you think of a more suitable animal mascot for Twitter? Not really. deer maybe? jellyfish?

13. What kind of new cool innovative application would you like to see on Facebook or Twitter? What would you call it? I am fresh out of imagination for the day.

14. Have you ever had to block someone from Facebook or Twitter? On twitter, yes people with graphic images

15. Do you allow your real life friends to communicate with you there or do you prefer to be incognito to the universe at large? a little of both

16. Do you belong to any CAUSES on Facebook or Twitter? If so, what makes you passionate about them and why did you join? tons on facebook

17. Do you know what a Twibe is? Nope

18. Have you ever rage twitted? Tell me! sometimes I let off a little steam

19. I find that more and more people are reading my blogs on Facebook and commenting there. Do you share your blog posts on Facebook? Do you find that it helps or hinders your blog traffic? I dont post my blog posts on fb

Follow me on Facebook!

NaBloPoMo: Tasty Tuesday

I did it again! I forgot about NaBloPoMo yesterday. Oh well, I think I'm just going to persevere and try to finish my 30 days of posting. I wanted to do Tasty Tuesday again, where you post a recipe that has something to do with the book your currently reading. But I have fallen behind on my reading so... I think I will post the recipe I used for dinner last night. It was delicious! Here goes...

Our Favorite Chicken Milanese

prep time
15 min
total time
39 min
makes
6 servings

What You Need!

1/3 cup KRAFT Real Mayo Mayonnaise
2 cloves  garlic, minced
25 RITZ Crackers, finely crushed (about 3/4 cup)
1/4 cup  finely chopped fresh parsley
6 small boneless skinless chicken breast halves (1-1/2 lb.), pounded to 1/4-inch thickness
1/4 cup oil, divided

Make It!

MIX mayo and garlic in pie plate; mix cracker crumbs and parsley in second pie plate.
DIP chicken in mayo mixture, then in crumb mixture, turning to evenly coat both sides of each breast.
HEAT 2 Tbsp. oil in medium nonstick skillet. Cook chicken, in batches, 4 min. or until done and evenly browned, turning after 2 min. and adding the remaining oil as needed.

Kraft Kitchens Tips

Substitute
Substitute pork loin cutlets for the chicken breast halves.
Fish Milanese
Prepare as directed, substituting mild white fish fillets, such as catfish or tilapia, for the chicken breasts. Do not pound fish fillets to flatten and reduce the cooking time to 3 min. on each side or until fish flakes easily with fork.
Serving Suggestion
Serve with a steamed green vegetable, such as broccoli, and glass of fat free milk.
 -Courtesy of www.kraftrecipes.com
I thought this recipe was really flavorful. I didnt use parsley because I had none, and used italian bread crumbs instead of crushed Ritz crackers but it tasted just as good to me. I have been searching for a way to get breading to stick to chicken and I think the method they use here is the key. The mayo gives flavor and makes the breadcrumbs stick, not falling off soggily as you try to cut it. I served it with green beans and a biscuit.
